04 · DPS Updates

What changed at DPS —
and how we handle it.

Step 01

Pre-Trip Inspection

Your road test now includes a ~40 minute inspection. You'll name and touch parts on the truck — we drill this until it's second nature.

Step 02

Skills Test

Four maneuvers on the pad: forward stop, straight-line backing, forward offset tracking, and reverse offset backing. We rehearse each one until you nail it cold.

Step 03

Road Test

The actual driving portion — safe turns, lane changes, intersections, and freeway driving in real traffic. We ride with you until you're test-ready.

05 · Requirements

What you need to
get your Texas CDL.

Make sure you check every box below before you start. Bring questions — we'll walk you through the paperwork.

  • Pass the mandatory Texas CDL written examinations that apply to you.
  • Be 21 years old (or 18 if all driving stays within Texas, no hazmat, no double/triple trailers).
  • Hold a valid DOT medical certificate per 49 CFR 391.41–391.49.
  • Hold a driver license from only one state, not suspended, revoked, or canceled anywhere.
  • Proof of citizenship, residence card, or work permit.
  • Pay DPS testing and licensing fees (average $70).
06 · Our Process

Four steps to your
Class A license.

  1. 01
    Step

    Consultation & Written Test Prep

FREE help getting ready for the written tests. We point you to the right sections of the Texas Commercial Handbook and share sample questions to accelerate your study. Stop by first so we can start registration — payment is due on sign-up and before materials are given.

  2. 02
    Step

    Take the Written Tests

For Class A, DPS tests you on Special Requirements, General Knowledge, Combinations, and Air Brakes — that's what's required to move forward. Tests are taken at any DPS location. Once you pass the required sections, you'll request your Learner's Permit ($11). You'll also perform an Air Brake demonstration and a Pre-Trip inspection in English — and the pre-trip isn't just naming parts, you need to know what each part does and what to look for. We'll make sure you're ready before you walk in.

  3. 03
    Step

    Drive On the Road

A licensed Class A driver rides with you every session in our rental trucks. Automatics help new drivers focus on the road instead of the gearbox; we also run 10-speed standard trucks. Backing up and parallel parking are the hardest parts — we won't take you to DPS until you're confident. Fail your first attempt? We bring you back at no extra cost, up to 3 chances just like DPS.

  4. 04
    Step

    Take the Road Test

When you can comfortably handle safe turns, curb clearance, backing, parallel parking, freeway driving, pre-trip, air brake demo, and splitting truck and trailer — we take you to DPS in our truck and stand with you. Your success is our priority.

What you'll practice in our trucks
  • Safe left & right turns
  • Avoiding curb clips
  • Backing up safely
  • Parallel parking
  • Freeway driving
  • Pre-trip inspection
  • Air brake demonstration
  • Splitting truck and trailer
05 · The Road Ahead

The industry is hiring.

The U.S. Department of Labor projects nearly 600,000 truck driver openings per year. Hot shot, end dump, gooseneck, crane, oil tanker, dump truck, concrete, distribution centers — opportunity is everywhere for drivers who are safe, observant, in control, and committed.
